Career insights by GGI is a new series by GGI sharing hacks and tips around management consulting, MBA, product management and public policy.
In this GGI career insight, we will be sharing insights into: the hard and soft skills that helped me make salary worth a crore.
What are the 3 skills that I learned as a management consultant at BCG, which helped me grab a package of 1 crore?
1. Stakeholder management
My ability to manage my peers, project leader and manager has helped me get timely promotions, be it working in a boutique management firm or at BCG. This skill has allowed me to beautifully grow in my career.
Even today as an entrepreneur, I manage the CXOs of various leading organisations like BCG, McKinsey and Amazon. Additionally, I am dealing with 20+ team members from the technology to the marketing team.
2. Problem Solving
Prowess at solving case studies has helped me a land job with the Government of India, BCG and Tony Blair Institute.
I would recommend all of you to case interview preparation. It helps you gain the skill of bringing structure to a chaotic situation. Having this skill in your arsenal can help you land a strategy role in your organisation.
3.1 Speak Briefly
This particular skill is hard to master but essential for your growth.
Young professionals struggle with talking in a structure. This becomes a big problem when you are dealing with CXOs who are busy and have less time to hear all the stories.
Try to talk in 3 points, it goes a long way in good communication. People can easily grasp the main points and filter out the extra information.
I have negotiated my salary time and again. This never happens in a negotiation format per se, but as a request. It depends on the quality of your interview and the leverage you hold.
You can notice how none of these are hard skills, they are soft business skills. They can not be acquired in a passive format, but in an interactive one.
At Global Governance Initiative, we teach the practical problem-solving skills required to become a management consultant. Our masterclasses are hosted by leading professionals in the industry of consulting. This helps our students learn from real time experts.
